The Parent Education Group is pleased to offer counseling through the professional psychological services of Laura Doerflinger MS LMHC. The following is her treatment approach in the specific area of adult therapy.
One of my most treasured opportunities as a therapist is counseling a wide range of ages and stages in the human experience. I work with a variety of children, teens, and adults for a multitude of reasons. The first reason is that by understand a child’s perspective; I gain insight into an adult’s perspective. By understanding an adult’s perspective; I gain insight into a child’s perspective. You are a whole person with a whole life and I’ve been granted a bird’s eye view of the process from 4-84. The second reason I work with children and adults is that it keeps me on my toes. One hour I’m playing in the sand box with a 6-year old and the next having a conversation with a 40-year old executive who plays in a different arena all together! It keeps me fresh and alert.
Because I am ultimately a family systems therapist, I see individuals in the context of their families, communities and cultures. Within this context, I offer adult clients several options in therapy. For clients who want immediate skills, my cognitive-behavioral and crisis training background offers quick diagnostic opportunities and solution-focused problem-solving. For clients who are searching for new insights and answers to long-term problems, I offer Lifestyle Assessments formally and informally. This assessment takes place over several sessions and is like a self-guided tour of one’s history, one’s beliefs, and one’s meaning. The insights gathered from the Lifestyle Assessment can deliver a new understanding of one’s purpose.
The adult journey, whether short-term solution-focused counseling or long-term insight therapy is one in which I am confident and competent to work with you on.
